Five of the Shortest Flights on Earth

A+ A- A

Cirrius aircraftAn important aspect of an airplane is how far it can fly or its ‘range.’ Major airlines are racing to introduce longer and more direct flights all over the world. To hold the crown of the longest scheduled flight, airlines are investing in new technologies and contracting bigger and more impressive aircraft to be built. This is exciting for passengers and aviation enthusiasts alike, because it improves travel times with more comfort and fewer layovers during trips. Conversely, sometimes the only feasible option to get from one place to another is by plane. For this reason, there are many unique flights in the world that are shorter than 2 minutes!

The Top 5 Shortest Flights in The World

  • 5. Molokai to Kalaupapa – 8.7 Miles
Mokulele Airlines offers this 15-minute flight between two airports in Hawaii, connecting islands to Hawaii’s capi Honolulu.
  • 4. Minami-Daito to Kitadaito – 7.46 Miles
Due to the lack of a harbor this flight is the only means of connecting these two islands in the Philippine Sea that are a part of the Daito island group.
  • 3. Caye Caulker to Caye Chapel – 2.42 Miles
The Caribbean islands are a popular and beautiful vacation spot. Caye Caulker has over 2000 inhabitants while Caye Chapel is a privately-owned island that has an incredible golf course, clubhouse, and conference building. The views are absolutely breathtaking and if you are lucky enough to vacation there, you’ll get to fly on one of the shortest flights in the world.
  • 2. Westray to Papa Westray – 1.86 Miles
Scotland is home to the shortest regularly scheduled commercial flight in the world. These two islands are separated only by a small stretch of seawater only a few miles apart. Logainair has operated the flight for over 50 years. Flights between the Westray islands are offered daily taking passengers to work and school. Aviation enthusiasts can also be spotted on the plan, as they check off an item on their bucket list to fly the shortest scheduled flight.
  • 1. Kegata to Apowo – 1.24 Miles
Even though the flight is not a regularly scheduled, it holds the record for the shortest flight on Earth! It is the only way to travel between these locations. The land between them is covered in thick jungle making it impossible to travel by land. Even though the runways are short, slippery, and on grass, they provide a stunning view and a chance to be a part of the record books.
