3 Aviation Careers Outside the Flight Deck

The world is taking notice of the huge shortages forecast for pilots, but the lesser told story is of the pending shortage of a pilot’s support personnel. The good news is that the aviation industry is an amazing opportunity! While a budding workforce complains about the lack of good-paying entry-level jobs, the aviation industry is the answer to the problem!

Corporate-sponsored programs are cropping up for the technical training classes necessary to meet the needs of the aviation industry. High school students are being increasingly exposed to technical careers that don’t require a college degree. This means that you can become career-ready in the aviation industry without amassing a huge amount of study loan debt.

Support Personnel Aviation Careers

Below are three great options for aviation careers outside the flight deck:

  1. Aviation Maintenance Technician – If you have a passion for airplanes, mechanical aptitude, and are detail-oriented, a career as an aviation maintenance technician (AMT) is a good fit! AMT skills are necessary for keeping airplanes safe, operating efficiently, and in good working order.
  2. Security – In our post-9/11 world, you can’t underestimate the significance of aviation safety and security. Added layers of security and situational awareness all require additional levels of personnel, equating to more job opportunities!
  3. Remote Piloting – Lastly, becoming a remote pilot is a great way to stay on the ground while still capitalizing on the need for aviation employees! If you like the idea of piloting but you prefer to stay out of the sky, flying drones would be the perfect fit!

While the pilots and crew who fly are the final cogs in the mechanism of executing a mission, remember there is a critical support team allowing those flights to take place in the first place. Without them, the aircraft never leaves the ground.
