3 Tips to Purchase your First Plane

Cirrus aircraft

Growing up, if you desired to become a pilot, there is a possibility that owning one was also a part of your fantasy. As an adult, the moment has finally arrived, and you are all set to buy your first plane. However, before you do, consider the following three things:

  1. Define Your Needs
Be clear on why you desire to own an airplane. There are myriad reasons why one wants to buy it. However, be realistic with the reason, as purchasing a plane will be one of the greatest transactions of your life.

Defining your needs for owning is paramount to determining if the effort and cost of ownership are truly worth it.

Ask yourself these questions, and you will be easily able to define your needs: how many hours a year will you fly? Next, take a glance at your rental experience and assess your flight hours. Were rental airplanes available on time when you required an aircraft? Were the rented aircraft in a viable position? Will flying habits improve if you maintain and operate your own airplane?

  2. Be Set On Your Budget
Maxing out the budget on the purchase price is not a wise move. Stick to your budget and do not blow it all on the purchase; otherwise, you will get in trouble. Do not indulge in purchase without setting aside a cash reserve for those first-year surprises; maintenance costs, unexpected repair costs, running costs, etc.

  3. Never Underestimate An Expert’s Advice
You may feel like an “expert” after perusing all the buying guides on the web or by taking a few flying lessons. However, do not fool yourself by pretending to be an expert.
