How Flight Simulation Can Make You a Better Pilot

Before flight simulators were available, learning to fly was much more dangerous. Luckily pilots didn’t have to wait long for a safer way to learn because the first flight simulator was developed in 1927. It was known as the Link Trainer, and it replicated a complete cockpit, supplying starting pilots with valuable training without the danger of actual flight.

Flight simulation has come a long way since 1927, and today’s flight simulators are very realistic, ranging from full-motion enclosed simulators to smartphone apps. With an abundance of safe learning options, there has never been a better time to take advantage of the benefits of flight simulation.

  • Advanced training – Flight simulators provide a safe environment to learn basic and advanced skills. Modern flight simulators have customized options to create a training routine for different skill levels and aircrafts.
  • Staying sharp – All good pilots know that spending time in the cockpit is the best way to stay in practice. Building and maintaining proficiencies strengthen skills, reduces risks, and helps you be the best pilot possible. Simulators are a cost-effective way to practice your skills.
  • Practicing communication – Knowing the basics of radio communication is important for pilots, but it can be challenging. Even seasoned pilots can have difficulty keeping up with the rapid-fire ATC communication. Flight simulators offer options to help you practice radio techniques and master ATC communication skills.
  • Navigation skills – A simulator helps pilots improve VFR and IFR navigation skills. If you’re planning to fly to an unfamiliar destination, you can use a flight simulator to practice the flight route before you go.
  • Risk management – Lastly, the biggest benefit of simulation is the ability to practice handling in-flight emergencies and high-risk scenarios. In these simulations, you can make the mistakes that would be impossible to survive during a real flight. Simulation can help you hone your ability to deal with in-flight crisis scenarios.
