Social Media Tips for Airline Pilots

A+ A- A

Handsome man in suitIt’s common knowledge that many hiring managers will use social media to screen their applicants. If you’re up for a pilot job and they have to narrow it down between you and two or three other people, they may visit your Facebook page to help them make their decision. What they find on your page could make or break your career.

Social Media Tips for Pilots

Because of this, it’s important to have a do’s and don’ts guide for posting on social media. These do’s and don’ts are below:

Don’t –

  • Post pictures of yourself doing anything illegal. This will make potential employers think you may not care about rules. Additionally, posting tons of party pictures will tell a hiring manager that you lack discretion and may not be trustworthy enough to operate a million-dollar aircraft.
  • Post stories or pictures of yourself doing anything questionable at your current place of employment. It’s obvious that if you’re willing to do risky things at your current job, you’ll be likely to do them at your potential job as well.
  • Say horrible or offensive things about your current place of employment. This is a big red flag for hiring managers when a prospective employee publicly bashes their place of work. You need to show respect for any place of employment.
  • Use foul language or publicly post anything vulgar or offensive. If you’re going to be in the market for a new job anytime soon, you may want to clean up your social media pages. Posting a string of negativity on your page may make a hiring manager afraid that you’ll bring negativity to the workplace as well.

Do –

  • Use privacy settings on all of your social media pages. It’s important for you to know that anything you post online is never truly private, but you can protect your personal information with privacy settings.
  • Show your enthusiasm for aviation and flying in a positive way. Using your social media pages to promote aviation and share your motivation and passion for flying is something a potential employer may look favorably on.

Social media outlets are a great place to network, expand your knowledge, and share your passion for aviation. Make sure your social media pages are a positive influence in your life and in your future career in aviation!
