If you want to learn to fly a plane and plan to join a flight training school, there is little you can do to prepare for it in advance. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to sit and wait for your school year to begin.
Ways you can prepare for your flight school in advance
Flight Simulators: One of the best things you can do right away is to practice with flight simulators. These will help you develop your hand-eye coordination skills and aviation knowledge, which will give you an edge when you finally start your flight training. If you don’t want to invest in a full desktop simulator, several simulator apps are on your phone. This is a great way to gain exposure to the basics of flight principles.
Listen to Live ATC: Most pilots in training struggle with learning the language of pilots and air traffic controllers. You can get started by listening to busy radio frequencies at general aviation airports like Tererboro (KTEB), Denver’s Centennial (KAPA), or Van Nuys to get familiar with terms used by pilots. Additionally, you can start memorizing ICAO phonetic alphabets and their corresponding name, as they are used in aviation in almost everything.
Ride Along on Flight Lessons: Many flight training schools allow students newly enrolled students in riding along with flight lessons on private planes. So you can ask your flight school if you can begin shadowing flight lessons. Make sure to make notes about what the students and instructors are doing during the lessons, so it is easier for you to remember.
By doing this, you can ensure you are doing your best to utilize the time before you start your flight training.
