Flying is safer now than it has ever been in history! This is thanks to improved airplane design, maintenance, training, and regulations. However, when you’re traveling to visit family and friends this holiday season, you may still encounter an emergency. In this situation, it’s safer to be prepared; better safe than sorry, as they say.
Guidelines For Safe Holiday Travel
Below are a few tips for safe holiday air travel this season:
Evacuation – In the (unlikely) event that you’ll need to evacuate, please leave bags and other personal items behind. They aren’t worth your life. In fact, passengers are supposed to evacuate in 90 short seconds. If everyone stopped to grab their bags, they’d be putting everyone else’s life in danger.
Packing – When packing for your trip, be aware of the TSA regulations and leave any hazardous items at home. Some of the items may seem strange, but static electricity, pressure and temperature variations, and vibrations during flight can cause some of these materials to generate toxic fumes, ignite a fire, or even explode.
Phones – We know that it can be inconvenient to turn your cell phone to airplane mode. We wouldn’t insist upon it if it weren’t important. Please only use phones and other electronic devices when the flight crew says it’s ok.
Buckle Up – First, it’s important that you listen and pay attention to the flight crew during the initial safety briefing, and make sure to look over the safety-briefing cards as well. Anytime the seatbelt light is on, your seatbelt and those of your children or other loved ones should be on.
Child Safety Seats – Lastly, it’s always a good idea to have your young children and infants buckled into a safety seat. If you aren’t sure if your child’s car seat will work on an airplane, please visit its website or call to ask.
